Students complained federal school lunch rules removed their favorites
The Obama administration has reversed some of the new lunch rules
"Children cried" over the loss of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, one director says

(CNN) -- In a battle over healthier school lunches that pitted the Obama administration against school children, chalk up a point for the kids.
Students have been complaining that some of their favorite foods were taken off the plate because of the Obama administration's efforts to make school lunches healthier.
High school students in Kansas made a video called "We Are Hungry," complete with feigned fainting that's been viewed more than a million times on YouTube.
Last week, the administration reversed some of the new school lunch rules, and the kids are happy again, says Dave Porter, superintendent of Wallace County, Kansas, schools.

"Even though we're a small town in rural western Kansas, Washington did hear us," he said. "Our concerns were listened to."
Under the original rules, which went into effect at the beginning of the school year, schools couldn't serve spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread because it includes too many grains.
A grilled chicken sandwich with a side order of celery sticks and a bit of peanut butter for dipping was also forbidden because it made for too many servings of protein.

Now, garlic bread and peanut butter are back on the plate.
"These changes are wonderful. They give us back flexibility," said Sandra Ford, president of the national School Nutrition Association.
Do you agree with the changes?
Some of the original changes just didn't make sense, Ford said.
For example, she had to stop serving her own students peanut butter and jelly sandwiches some days because the bread put her over the federal government's grain limit.
"Children cried," said Ford, director of food and nutrition services at Manatee County, Florida, schools.
"For some of them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are all they would eat."

Schools still have to follow calorie limits and fruit and vegetable requirements that were part of the healthier school lunch changes.
The secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the school lunch program, said it anticipated some modifications would need to be made in the school lunch rules.
"USDA has asked for, and states and schools have provided us with, valuable feedback," Secretary Thomas Vilsack wrote in a letter last week to Sen. John Hoeven, R-North Dakota, who had expressed concern about the changes.
An effective vegetarian weight loss plan must encompass 3 things - a proven vegetarian weight loss diet, a set of sure-fire fat-burning workouts and easy-to-follow weight loss tips. They work just like your brain, heart and kidney. Short of one and your weight loss regimen will likely fail. Let's run through a free sample of vegetarian weight loss plan to show you precisely what you need so that you can use it as a guide to customize your own vegetarian weight loss diet plan.
To make it easy for you to follow through this free vegetarian weight loss plan, I'll insert tips alongside the vegetarian weight loss diet as well as the fat-burning workouts.
Free Vegetarian Weight Loss Plan - Diet
You need 5 vegetarian weight loss meals to power your day - boost metabolism, burn fat, feed energy to fuel your activities. In this meal plan, your breakfast, lunch and dinner should contain about 40 - 60% fibrous food. If you feel too much for your condition, you can do some adjustments accordingly. You'll insert snack in between them to help you remain metabolically active and keep you going.
In each of these main vegetarian weight loss meals, your breakfast, lunch and dinner should each keep you full up to 70% only, while your snack 30 - 40%. When you fill your stomach to the brim in every meal, you'll abuse your insulin level, and over time you'll suffer from diabetic condition. Also, as more blood flows to aid in food digestion, less blood carrying oxygen will flow to your brain, resulting in sleepiness. Therefore , 70% for main meal is the ideal level. Bear in mind.
Here's a brief sample vegetarian weight loss diet to give you an idea.
Breakfast - Oatmeal. You can sprinkle some dried apricots, dried cranberries, pistachio nuts, flaxseeds over to improve its nutritional value and make it look more appealing.
Morning Snack - Mixed fruits.
Lunch - Veggie burger. Use pan-seared Portobello mushroom as the meat substitute (you can prepare this early in the morning before you leave for work). Then top the mushroom with some shredded veggies. Add a piece of vegan cheese and a dash of curried lentil sauce. You can also spice it up moderately with cayenne pepper which produces thermogenic effect to help you burn more fat.
Afternoon Snack - Mixed grains, nuts and seeds.
Dinner - Rainbow salad. Include any salad vegetables and chopped fruits of your favorite. Mix 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and 2 tbsp virgin coconut oil as salad dressing.
You should make your dinner rich in fiber so that you won't crave for supper or night snack, and should last you till the following morning.
Free Vegetarian Weight Loss Plan - Exercise
You can go with any exercise so long as you feel comfortable. But if you want to maximize your vegetarian fat loss, you should do high-intensity interval training. For example , you'll cycle at normal speed for a minute, and then on next minute you increase the speed. After a minute, you drop your speed back to normal again. Scientists and researchers have proven that such low-high-low intensity pattern will help you burn more fat.
For best fat loss effect, do it in the morning, preferably before 7 A. M. Any other times in the day works fine if you can't make it so early. The truth is, you'll still burn fat, albeit lesser.
Bonus Vegetarian Weight Loss Tips
Take this free vegetarian weight loss plan and do some customization to fit into your own needs and schedules. You may need to find out the list of foods available in your nearby stores to make sure you always have the ingredients at your disposal to whip up delicious fat loss meals.
For fat-burning workouts, you need not buy expensive equipment or gadgets (if you want to save on that). You can use full bodyweight exercises such as jumping jacks, plank, side plank, pushups, lying hip extension, step-ups, bicycle crunch, mountain climbers, Spiderman climbs, prisoner squat etc . You can perform them in the comfort of your own home. You'll lose fat just as effective.
Last but not least, your vegetarian weight loss plan should also include getting quality sleep and consume adequate amount of water for proper hydration, so that you can detox optimally and lose weight effectively as a vegetarian with half the effort and time.
weight loss is becoming an unhealthy obsession dealing with body images, but in some cases can improve health and fitness. When weight loss is a result of eating healthy, exercising and/or taking natural weight loss supplements in contrast to synthetic prescription drugs with the risk of harmful side effects, weight loss can be effective, rewarding, and greatly improve overall health.
Extra weight, especially extra fat on a person's body, applies significantly increased stresses on the heart, joints and back. These stresses can be extremely detrimental to one's health. Healthy weight loss can reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arthritis and other health problems, as well as generally extending an otherwise average life span. Recently, the scientific root cause or explanation of obesity has been revealed as being part of one's physiology. The internal functions of an obese person are different than those of a healthy person, and cause intense hunger pains and food cravings.
Natural weight loss supplements can help counteract this constant hunger and lead to healthy weight loss. Unbalanced hormones are a common cause of weight gain, therefore taking natural hormone balancers and herbal supplements would help to create a healthy weight loss regimen. Restoring your health allows you to lose weight naturally, without excess frustration and effort. It's all about losing weight from the inside out.
Emotional issues always accompany change, especially changes in our bodies e.g. natural weight loss. weight loss affects our perception body image, our sense of identity i.e. who am I?, and how we feel about ourselves in general. weight loss also effects our social relationships in that there may be people in our family or social contacts that are emotionally invested in our remaining the same i.e. overweight with all that it symbolizes e.g. friendliness, non-threatening, protective, jovial, helpful, etc. Beyond our physical health, it can be said that "size matters" cognitively and emotionally to ourselves and others. Eating and food have come to symbolize being accepted, being cared for and comfort. Having the support of others in our efforts to naturally lose weight and regain our health is a huge advantage.
We have been "conditioned" to fear any kind of loss, including weight loss. Especially if what we may lose is something with which we identify i.e. use to tell us who we are.
The emotions of fear, anger, anxiety and depression effect our weight. We often tend to "stuff our feelings" or numb these emotional feelings or stress by overeating. We may even overeat, thinking that will ease the physical discomfort caused by excess weight e.g. physical pain, lack of sleep, and lack of energy caused by moderate depression. To improve our overall health and support us through the process of natural weight loss and the emotional dynamics around it, we can take advantage of natural sleep aids, natural depression relief and natural pain relief health care products.
Our weight and health is greatly dependent upon our having a healthy digestive system or metabolism. Our digestive system converts, on a cellular and muscular level, the foods we eat, eliminates toxins, and uses and stores glucose for energy. Natural enzymes trigger hunger signals and facilitate absorption of nutrition. Good digestion with the help of natural enzymes aids in the conversion of fat to muscle.
Allergy and sensitivity to food, parasites, yeast overgrowth and emotional stress are signals of digestive disruption and inflammation. Natural essential fatty acids work to reduce intestinal inflammation, decrease harmful acids, help the liver process proteins that grow muscle, balance hormones and facilitate the elimination of toxins. Natural essential fatty acids help clear our digestive system of heavy metals, harmful bacteria, pesticides that we are increasingly encountering in our environment. Essential fatty acids along with natural fiber help us clean out the intestinal debris that harm our health and often lead to weight gain. Essential fatty acids also help our brain's neurotransmitters to function properly in order to deal with stress, emotions, and cravings that can lead to overeating and weight gain.
Natural amino acids are the building blocks that make up proteins. Next to water, protein makes up the greatest part of our body weight. Amino acids help increase metabolism, build muscle, ease moderate depression, and help burn fat. Natural antioxidants help carry more oxygen to cells and muscles to help increase energy, burn fat, build muscle and process the foods we eat.
Hormone balance is essential for natural weight loss. Our metabolism slows as we get older because of the decrease or imbalance of hormones. This contributes to weight gain. Hormone balance also helps us deal with stress that leads to weight gain. Proper hormone balance helps to decrease cravings and binge eating. There are many natural hormone balancing products available, e.g. natural progesterone, promensil, soy isoflavones, essential fatty acids and hormone balancing formulas.
Our metabolism's primary task is to nourish our brains. We need healthy neurotransmitters to help us curb craving, ease depression, and deal with stress that lead to weight gain. Balancing our natural brain chemistry has a calming effect and allows us to feel a sens of well being and safety. There are many natural health care products to help balance brain chemistry, e.g. essential fatty acids, natural depression relief products, natural products to increase serotonin, and more. When our brain feels well and safe, it is prone to change our metabolism from calorie saving to calorie burning.
Our bodies were designed to move and be active. Movement requires muscle activity. Muscle activity uses the glycogen supply found in our muscles. When this glycogen supply stored in our muscles is used, our body is forced to use stored fat as an energy source. Using this stored fat through movement and exercise, results in natural weight loss. There is no reason for us to become athletes to accomplish natural weight loss. Low impact exercise like swimming, walking, etc, can be done slowly and without strain. In order to lose real weight rather than "water weight", it is important to drink extra amounts of water when exercising. Drinking more water will also help our digestive system and metabolism to use and eliminate extra weight.
Remember, the first objective, accomplished through natural weight loss, is to improve our physical and emotional health. This involves having a healthy digestive system, a healthy emotional system and a healthy nutritional system. We can build these healthy systems with natural vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, natural digestive aid, pain relief aid, natural sleep aids, natural emotional and mood aids, essential fatty acids and many more helpful natural health care products. We need to concentrate on improving our general health, feeling good, and living well through natural weight loss, rather than constantly comparing ourselves to someone else's idea about appearance from some magazine. Physical and emotional health is primary. Appearance may be important to us, but it is secondary. Through natural weight loss, we can live well and live long.
Nearly everyone is concerned about too much fat in his or her diet. We are constantly hearing about the link between fat and heart disease and other life threatening diseases such as diabetes. But how much do we really know about fats and the effects of fat on our health. Did you know that you actually need fat to metabolize fat? This is why low-fat diets do not always result in weight loss. Therefore , should we add fat when we are preparing healthy meals or leave fat out? It all depends on the type of fat and how we use it. We need our meals to be a good source of health food and vitamins. Here is the skinny on fats and what you need to know when preparing healthy dinner recipes.
There are three basic types of fat: saturated, unsaturated and trans fats. Generally, we should get about 20-30% of our daily calories from fat and only 10% of that should come from saturated fats.
Saturated fats come from animal or diary products and are the least healthy choices to include in your diet. The reason for this is they increase the levels of triglycerides in your bloodstream, which is what causes blockage in the arteries over time. The general rule to remember is the redder the meat the higher the saturated fat content will be, hence the higher the triglycerides in the bloodstream. When eating beef or pork be sure to choose the leanest cuts and remove any visible fat before cooking. It’s always best to include more chicken, with the skin removed and fish in your diet because these are lower in fat. When buying yogurt, or other dairy products choose 1% or 2% fat or those made with skim milk.
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats come from certain nuts, fish and oils such as olive, canola and flaxseed oil. These fats are known to actually reduce triglycerides by producing good cholesterol referred to as HDL. Polyunsaturated oils are also found in beans and soy products. These are important health foods for vitamins and nutrients because they contain omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids. These oils are important for maintaining healthy blood and helping to prevent the development of plaque. The best oil products to use when serving salads is a first cold pressed virgin olive oil because it contains the freshest of nutrients. Regular olive oil (not cold pressed) can be used when cooking at heats less than 600 degree F. Other alternative choices when baking or frying are shortening or vegetable oils.
Trans fats (or hydrogenated) are the worst fats of all because they increase triglyceride levels and hence bad cholesterol (LDL). Trans fats are commonly found in commercially produced foods and vegetable oils, hydrogenated margarines and spreads. Products are now being developed and easier to find with No Trans Fats written on the packaging. Try and reduce the amount of processed foods in your diet and you’ll avoid most of this type of harmful fat.
A health food diet will always include the essential vitamins and nutrients. At your next dinner start out with a fresh salad using an olive oil based dressing. Then a serving of fish, chicken or lean red meat along with some whole grain breads or pastas and steamed vegetables. Finish up your meal with a light dairy product or low-fat ice cream or yogurt topped with fresh fruit. Remember, we need fat to metabolize fat and by choosing the good fats in olive oils, fish, chicken and nuts we can help our bodies slim down and prevent diseases all at the same time.
Years ago I found myself weighing 250 pounds, constantly squeezing rolls of fat on my stomach, and just all around unhappy with myself in the mirror. Personally, I know what it feels like to suck your stomach in and wonder what it would be like to be shredded. Now, my job as a fat loss and fitness expert allows me to use my empathy and knowledge to train numerous clients and help them achieve unbelievable success in reaching their target body in my boot camps. It takes a lot of work and a lot of training. It has been proven again and again, the best training program for fat loss and lean muscle gain activates as many muscle groups of the total body in the shortest amount of time. While interval training is hands down the best protocol to use during an exercise session to build muscle and lose fat, compound movements efficiently provide total body workouts and give you an amazing boom for your buck in a single exercise.
Compound movements or combination lifts combine two or more movements performed uninterrupted and in succession into one exercise. For example, take two familiar exercises. The squat, which is notorious for its fat blasting and lean muscle packing effects. Now throw in an overhead press and the squat/press compound includes even more of your total body and becomes downright merciless. Simply put, compound movements explosively burn fat and build lean muscle because they activate more muscle in a shorter amount of time. Prioritize your personal workouts with compound movements like these instead of single joint exercises to supposedly "isolate a muscle" and your good to go. Remember this Power Body Reaction:
↑Muscles Involved"(↑Calories Burnt + ↑Muscle-Building Stimulus )"↑Fat Lost + ↑Muscle Gain

An essential component of a fitness lifestyle is hydration. We require require water to transport vitamins and minerals throughout our body. Hydration also ensures the bodt doesn't over heat. Needless to say drinking water is a key to a successful workout.
Adequate water intake plays a major role in how women feel during and after the exercises. It is also important for the training performance and the overall safety during exercise. No mater whether the workout is aerobic or anaerobic one, such as in Women's Fitness Bootcamp's strength workouts' It's essential to consume water while on breaks to avoid dehydration.
Dehydration might happen when water intake is insufficient during intensive workouts. Due to the intensity of the exercises, trainees tend to quickly loose body weight through sweating, which drops the blood volume and might cause the heart to work harder pumping blood. In a sever cases, dehydration might include other symptoms, such as dizziness, muscle cramps, and fatigue. To avoid that, women must remember to drink a lot during and after the workout session, and not to do it only when they are thirsty. Often the workout is too intensive to get that feeling of thirst, so at Women's Fitness Bootcamp women have hydration timeouts to ensure proper hydration.
So how will one know she's adequately hydrated during the workout or afterwards? Doctors say there's several ways. For instance weighting yourself before and after the workout. There should be no drastic change in weight right after the workout' so less weight will indicate insufficient hydration. Such measurements of body weight before and after workout is also very useful for measuring the sweat rates and for customized fluid replacement programs. Apart from drinking water, consumption of drinks containing electrolytes and carbohydrates can also help maintain fluid electrolyte balance and boost the exercise performance. Another way is too monitor the urine color, usually after training. Women can check on their color. If it's light colored, it means the dilution is fine and hydration is also in control; if it's dark colored, women might not be properly hydrated and will need to compensate it by drinking! A good practice to follow is to drink about 15-20 fl oz, 2-3 hours before exercise, and drink 8-10 fl oz every 10-15 minuets during exercise. After the workout, a good practice would be to weight oneself and replenish weight losses if necessary. Drinking 20-24 fl oz water for every 1 lb lost, is the most effective water intake

The treadmill is one of the oldest at home workout machines around. Despite how long it has been in existence, it remains one of the best selling pieces of fitness equipment on today's market. Elliptical trainers, exercise bikes, and rowing machines have all found their own following in the at home fitness industry but none have been able to dethrone the treadmill. Why?
One big reason is because treadmill workouts are wonderfully simple. Treadmill walking or running is just like normal walking or running and takes no added skill or coordination. Another reason is that few workouts provide the user with more benefits than treadmill workouts. Because of recent technological advances, users can now get very creative with how they run a workout. Below are some examples.
1) Decline. Many newer treadmill models now come with a decline setting. You can simulate running down hill at a 3-5% decline. This is great for working a completely different muscle group in your legs. It's also great for extending the time of your workout because you can sort of catch your breath while still running.
2) Interval training. There is a lot of evidence that interval training burns more calories than regular workouts. What is interval training? It's switching between regular paced running or walking, and sprinting. This causes your heart rate to raise higher than it would from evenly paced exercise, thus causing your body to burn more calories. A treadmill allows you to increase and decrease your speed, and incline level to accomplish this.
3) Customized workouts. Many newer models come with pre-programmed workouts designed to give you the greatest benefits, and keep you entertained with a purpose, race, or goal to work for. They can be very motivating and can sometimes be the difference between working out or not, on days that you need a little motivation.
Working to keep yourself moving is part of Jane Fonda's Primetime new exercise videos. She has done a lot or research about people and how they age. She has concluded that the old saying "use it or lose it" is just a true now as when first said. Below is a list of some of her dvds and some of her books and a few of her movies on dvd.

Intermittent fasting - not eating for 16-36 hours a few times a week - is a safe, effective way to lose fat and improve health overall.
The wonderful thing is that after fasting several times, hunger greatly diminishes on your fasting days, often disappearing completely.
But if hunger is ever bothersome for you, particularly if you're new to intermittent fasting and going through the adaptation period, here are 7 tips that can help:
1. Try to avoid eating a high carbohydrate meal or snack right before you start your fast. Some people find that a high carb meal/snack stimulates hunger shortly afterward making it more challenging to continue with the fast. A meal/snack that emphasizes protein is a better choice.
2. Keep busy. The more you do things that distract you from thinking about food, the better. Many people eat when they are bored or because they are conditioned to eat based on what time it is, so if that describes you, be aware of it and try to do something that interests you so you won't be swayed by old habits and conditioning.
3. Remind yourself that your body doesn't actually NEED food to function during a short-term fast. You are not in danger. Energy will be drawn from food that is still digesting during the the first part of your fast. When that runs out, energy will come from the fat stores on your body. No matter what size you are, you usually have enough fat reserves to safely draw from during a short-term fast.
4. Remind yourself that your body has been trained to expect food at certain times and in certain situations, so hunger may rev up at those times during the fast. Again, you don't NEED to eat, your body is just telling you that it 'expects' food. This will change the more you do intermittent fasting - the body will stop it's non-emergency grumbling.
5. Keep hydrated. Have your favorite non-calorie drinks on hand (water, black coffee, green tea, herbal tea, sugar free soda, etc)
6. Sip on drinks that contain caffeine (coffee, tea, sugar free cola) because caffeine helps to suppress appetite. It's important to consume the drinks slowly, over the course of the day, because if you take in too much caffeine in a short period you will probably have a dramatic energy drop later on which can stimulate appetite.
7. Exercise. It's very safe to exercise on a fasting day. If it's intense exercise (a sprint, for example) it will usually kill appetite for a while.
Sometimes people feel light-headed or get headaches when they're trying intermittent fasting the first few times. This isn't due to blood sugar dropping too low - that's a myth that studies and intermittent fasting enthusiasts have disproven countless times.
The feeling is likely because the body is burning it's own fat for fuel, which it rarely has to do when you're eating frequently and drawing on food for fuel. You may find that a brief burst of exercise works very well to combat this, giving you a nice boost in energy - the opposite of what you'd expect!

Diabetic weight loss options may have become a top priority for you to research, especially if you have just received news from your doctor that you have diabetes and you should lose weight.
Trying to find a good weight loss program is hard enough. It may also seem an impossible task to find a good diabetic weight loss diet. This is where we may help out, by explaining 5 different diabetic weight loss diet options.
5 Diabetic Weight Loss Options:
Diabetic Food Exchange Diet: This diabetic diet plan is one of the main eating plans that doctors prescribe to people with diabetes. It may be confusing at first, yet once you understand its concept, you will find that it has two positive outcomes. It will help you lose weight and maintain your blood sugar.
Basically, the diabetic food exchange diet separates food into groups. Each group lists certain foods that may be eaten and the exact portion that may be eaten. Measuring the food portions exactly is very important on this diabetic weight loss diet. It is also important to eat on a very regular schedule.
Diabetic Food Pyramid: This diabetic food plan is easier to understand and implement than the diabetic food exchange diet. With this plan the foods are separated into different groups. The food group that allows the most servings is the base of the food pyramid. The next set of groups of foods follow up the pyramid, with the top of the pyramid representing the food group allowed the list.
You can lose weight on this diet and be satisfied, if you stay within the servings allowed each group and choose healthy, low calorie foods.
Atkins Diabetic Diet: This diet is found within the Atkins series of dieting books. The book, Atkins Diabetes Revolution, offers diabetic meal plans allowing three different levels of carbohydrate consumption. This diet plan begins with the person having only 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. Gradually, 40 grams of carbs are allowed, and finally, 60 grams of carbs are allowed per day. For Lenise Young, diabetes was a gift. Not the disease itself, of course for the past six years, shes had to inject herself with insulin twice a day, and she faces a host of potential complications, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease but for the changes its spurred in her life. Before her diagnosis, the Tinton Falls resident weighed 280 pounds, gorged on chocolate, and led a generally sedentary life. That all changed when routine tests for minor surgery revealed an alarmingly elevated blood sugar level (nearly 700; normal is between 70 and 110).
In addition to placing her on medication, her internist recommended she lose weight, change her diet, and start exercising. She did all three, and last year reaped the results: lowered blood sugar levels, lower dosages of medication, a 60-pound drop in weight, and an overall sense of well-being she hadnt experienced in years.
If any disease has a miracle" treatment, its type-2 diabetes the miracle, in this case, being diet and exercise. We dont have a true definition of what constitutes a cure for diabetes, but profound weight loss will put it into remission," says Marc Sandberg, M.D., an endocrinologist with Hunterdon Healthcare. In fact, Joel Fuhrman, M.D., a family doctor in Flemington and author of Eat to Live, defines type-2 diabetes as a dietary disease." While not everyone who gains excess weight will develop diabetes (the disease is at least partially genetic in origin), obesity is by far the greatest risk factor.
And that makes it a disease on the rise: Over the past two decades, as the rate of obesity in America has increased by 77 percent, diabetes rates have climbed 61 percent. Thats the bad news. Now, the good: Just as lifestyle factors can trigger diabetes, they can also help to get it under control or prevent its onset. If you have type-2 diabetes, pre-diabetes (a condition characterized by higher-than-normal blood glucose levels), or risk factors for diabetes (family history and/or obesity), heres how you can work some everyday miracles:
Lose weight. The key to diabetes is insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates blood sugar by moving glucose from the blood into the cells, where its used as fuel; the more weight you gain, the more insulin your body needs. But for people predisposed to type-2 diabetes, the pancreas, at a certain point, may not be able to produce sufficient insulin, or the cells may no longer recognize it a condition known as insulin resistance. While extreme weight loss can effectively reverse insulin resistance, the amount of weight loss necessary to improve insulin resistance is really just about ten percent of your current body weight," says Felice Caldarella, M.D., Sandbergs colleague at Hunterdon Healthcare. The closer you get to your ideal weight, the more likely it is youll be able to control your diabetes without drugs or head off a full-blown case of the disease.
Eat right. Weight loss by any means is likely to help reverse insulin resistance. But research shows that what you eat can also help you control, or prevent, diabetes. A recent study conducted at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, for instance, indicated that people who ate white rice five or more times a week were almost 20 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes than those who ate brown rice. That correlates with the American Diabetes Associations recommendation that people at risk for type-2 diabetes eat a diet high in fiber and whole grains. In fact, the Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on complex carbohydrates, good oils, and lean protein, is considered a model for people with or hoping to ward off diabetes. The key, says Fuhrman, is to consume foods rich in micronutrients (unprocessed plant foods like vegetables, fruits, and nuts). Consumption of foods low in micronutrients leads to gross overeating," he notes, which in turn can fuel diabetes.
Control stress. When stress occurs, your body responds by making a lot of stored energy glucose and fat available to cells, which are then primed to help your body get away from danger. In people with diabetes, insulin isnt always able to let the extra energy into the cells, so glucose piles up in the blood. Long-term stress can cause long-term high blood glucose levels. (See pages 13, 34, and 66 for de-stressing ideas.)
Get moving. Exercise in any form can help control diabetes, but Fuhrman recommends a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and interval training. Research done at Canadas University of Calgary showed that a combination of cardiovascular activity and weight training helped control blood sugar more effectively than either type of exercise alone.
For Lenise Young, whose goal is to be medication-free, exercise is an essential part of a four-pronged plan that also includes weight loss, healthy eating, and surrounding myself with positive people" something, she says, thats helped turn a negative into a positive."

By watching our diet, reading labels, taking good notes, finding good supplements and starting a easy exercise routine we can normalize our blood sugar levels.

The glucose tolerance test, will measure your blood sugar levels and help the doctor determine if you are a diabetic or pre-diabetic.
The numbers that determine if you are a pre-diabetic will range from 100-125 mg/dL. This test will be given to you during a fasting period and it measures your fasting glucose range. If your fasting glucose levels are above 125 you are considered diabetic. The glucose tolerance test is measuring the rise in your blood glucose levels after you take glucose. During this test if your blood sugar levels rise into the 140-199 range you are considered a pre-diabetic and as you guess it anything above 199 is diabetes.
How to Lower Blood Sugar Levels Naturally
The following are simple steps to take if you are inclined to change your daily habits. I trust your doctor has discussed these natural steps with you.
1. Your diet is the most important ingredient to lowering your blood sugars levels naturally. Foods that pass through your system quickly should be avoided and foods that take longer to digest are most beneficial to keeping your blood sugars in check. This all relates to the low-glycemic food group like: granola, oatmeal, beans, peas, and peanuts to name just a few. White bread and white rice should be limited but there is an option you will read about below.
As you should already know, each case is individual and specific to YOU. Some diabetics have to watch the fruits they eat because it will increase their blood glucose levels and others can get away with it. Some other options that should be considered are banana's (potassium) and high plant fibrous foods. And all of know that carbohydrates can adversely effect blood sugar levels, correct?
2. I bet this will come as a big shock to you: EXERCISE What you might not realize is the fact that our bodies work extremely well when you have a good oxygen exchange going on in your lungs. This happens when you are using your muscles a little more than normal.
Think about walking behind a lawn mower instead of sitting on one. If you have a large yard, divide it up into manageable sections like I do. The only problem is that I'd like to mow 4 days a week instead of 1 or 2. In the fall raking leaves or shoveling snow is a lot of fun, but be very careful not to overdue it. You don't want to shock the system. Vacuuming the house is beneficial and whenever you feel light headed sit down right away.
Walking, daily gardening and anything that is automated now can be switched to manual labor. Another fun thing that is going on is WII machines. Many different adult living centers now begun to use WII machines to help the elderly exercise in the comforts of the home or living center. Isn't that cool?
Did you know: pre-diabetics (risk group) if you do moderate daily exercises of 30 minutes and a weight reduction of 5 to 10 percent you can reduce your chances of getting diabetes by 58 percent?
3. If you really want to stay on top of this disease consider keeping good records and it will help you narrow down your daily activities and what foods helped you stabilize your blood sugar levels. Type I diabetics should also include the amount of insulin they take because you will find patterns that might help you lower your insulin intake.
Record keeping will help you calm down when you see a high blood sugar reading, Most diabetics from time to time will see a high reading and this is not a cause for alarm, with experience you will learn how to quickly change that reading, so please takes notes until
you have your blood glucose levels in check.
4. Drinking water and all I need to say is this: it will help flush out toxins quickly and it's vital to all living cells of your body.
5. eliminate western habits of eating out at fast food joints unless you'll be eating off their small "healthy menu". It's hard for me to say it but you must eliminate soft drinks and process sugars like candy bars.
6. become a label reader. You'll be shocked at what you find when you start reading labels. Take chocolate for instance, do you know how much caffeine is in chocolate?
7. learn how to say: "decaf please". Tea's and coffee's are staples of many societies and
8. nutritional supplements have shown they can help you lower your blood sugar levels. A lot of people have reduced their insulin levels and others have been able to take themselves off the "endangered list" or pre-diabetic list by using supplements.
9. herbs are another great resource for helping you lowering your glucose levels. Some of the more popular ones are: cinnamon, coffee berry, garlic and ginko biloba to name just a few.
10. make sure and add a column on your record keeping sheets to chart your sleep times, resting times and stress times. Blood glucose levels can be greatly influenced by stress and to combat stress, quality rest should be made available.
11. Yippee for vinegar. We all know that white rice and bread can really jump up our blood sugar levels but did you know vinegar will help you keep that in check? Arizona researchers found that two tablespoons of vinegar before a starchy meal can reduce the blood glucose levels in your blood. There is even more proof out of Sweden and Japan concerning vinegar that is a very positive finding for diabetics around the world.
